Working with the mod
WHAT IS THE MOD?
The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the government department in charge of defence. The MOD is one of the biggest public procurement organisations in Europe, managing some of the most complex and technologically advanced requirements in the world. Its customers, including the UK Armed Forces and national security agencies, buy everything from military fighting vehicles to education services and all kinds of facilities management services.
The MOD supports the British Armed Forces by providing world-class solutions for delivering national defence and security for the UK whilst ensuring the best possible value for the taxpayer.
Their procurement activity covers a very wide range of requirements, including:
- Technology: cloud and digital, network services, software and technology products and services
- Equipment and Support: ships, submarines, aircraft, vehicles, weapons, missiles, commodities and support (maintenance and repair)
- Infrastructure: construction, hard and soft facilities management, property consultancy.
Spending more with SMEs
The MOD spends over £20 billion a year on its procurement requirements and the UK is currently meeting its NATO pledge to spend 2% of national income on defence – meaning the marketplace has never been more attractive for SMEs!
MOD organisations such as Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) have released procurement plans and want to branch out and work with a ‘diverse supply base’. That means companies like yours!
The MOD recognises that SMEs have a great deal to offer in promoting economic growth. That is why they are working to help SMEs, including social enterprises and charities, to gain a greater share of defence-related business – as set out in the SME Action Plan 2019 -2022.
The Ministry of Defence SME Action Plan 2019-2022, sets a target of 25% by value of all departmental spend with industry to go to SMEs, whether directly or as part of the supply chain.
The Plan not only aims to boost SME business but also sets out initiatives that will remove barriers and improve access to opportunities for doing business with defence.
In the SME Action Plan, the then Minister for Defence Procurement, Stuart Andrew, stated that the MOD wants to:
“…encourage innovation and wider Small and Medium-sized Enterprise participation throughout our supply chain and will continue to pursue policies and practices that make it easier for new and smaller businesses to identify, compete for and win opportunities with the Ministry of Defence.”
